Safe work method statement (SWMS)
A document that sets out the high-risk construction work to be done, the hazards, the controls and how the controls will be implemented, prepared before the work starts.
High-risk construction work
Categories of construction work defined in the regulations, such as work at height over two metres or in deep trenches, that require a SWMS before they start.
Prestart briefing
A short meeting at the start of each shift where the supervisor covers the day's work, hazards, SWMS in force and any changes since the previous day.
Hold point
A stage in the inspection and test plan beyond which work must not proceed until the inspection has been done and signed off.
Compliance certificate
The certificate a licensed plumber lodges with the Victorian Building Authority to certify that plumbing work complies with the standards and regulations.
Tempering valve
A valve on a hot water service that mixes hot and cold water to deliver water at a safe temperature to bathrooms and other personal hygiene outlets.
Overflow relief gully
A drainage fitting outside a building that lets sewage surcharge safely outdoors if the sewer blocks, rather than inside the building.
Practical completion
The stage of a building contract when the work is complete except for minor defects and the building can be used for its intended purpose.
Variation
A change to the scope, price or time of a construction contract, which must be documented and approved before the varied work starts.
Do Not Operate tag
A tag attached to plant or equipment that has failed a check or is under repair, warning that it must not be used until cleared.
