Purpose. Lists every hazardous chemical stored or used in the yard, the depot and on sites, with its safety data sheet, storage location, quantity and the controls in place.

1.Purpose

Keystone must keep a register of the hazardous chemicals it uses and make the current safety data sheet available to workers. This register is the master list. Each site keeps an extract for the chemicals held on that site.

2.How the register is kept

The Yard and Plant Supervisor maintains the yard and depot entries and each site supervisor maintains the site extract. A chemical must be added before it is brought on site. Safety data sheets must be less than five years old and must be stored with the register and at the point of use.

3.Register entries

The register records the product name, supplier, hazard class, quantity held, storage location, the controls required and the date the safety data sheet was issued. Typical entries include fuels, LPG, solvents, adhesives, sealants, waterproofing membranes, cement, cleaning acids, paints and welding gases.

  • Diesel and unleaded fuel in bunded storage at the yard
  • LPG cylinders in the caged gas store
  • Solvent-based adhesives and primers in the flammables cabinet
  • Hydrochloric acid for brick cleaning in the corrosives cabinet
  • Two-part epoxy and polyurethane waterproofing membranes
  • Oxygen and acetylene for the plumbing workshop

4.Storage and segregation

Flammables, corrosives and gases must be stored in separate labelled cabinets or cages. Incompatible chemicals must not be stored together. Quantities on site must be kept to what is needed for the current stage of work. Spill kits must be located at each store.

5.Review

The register is reviewed every six months and whenever a chemical is added or removed. The WHS and Quality Manager checks the register during site audits and confirms that safety data sheets are current.
