Environmental Management and Waste Policy
v2.2
Purpose. States Keystone's environmental duties on site and in the yard, including sediment control, dust, noise, waste separation and the handling of asbestos and contaminated soil.
1.Purpose and legal basis
Keystone has a general environmental duty under the Environment Protection Act 2017 to minimise the risk of harm from its activities so far as reasonably practicable. This policy applies to every site, the yard and the depot, and to subcontractors working under Keystone's control.
2.Site environmental controls
Every site must have sediment fencing, stabilised entry, covered stockpiles and a wash-down area before earthworks start. Dust must be controlled by water spray and screening. Noisy work must stay within the hours in the council permit. Concrete washout and paint wash must never enter stormwater drains.
- Sediment fence and entry pad installed before excavation
- Stockpiles covered or stabilised within 48 hours
- Concrete washout in a lined pit or skip only
- Noise hours 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday
3.Waste separation and recycling
Sites must separate timber, metal, plasterboard, concrete and brick, cardboard and general waste into labelled bins. Waste dockets must be kept and entered against the project so the recycling rate can be reported. Keystone's target is to divert 80 percent of construction waste from landfill.
4.Hazardous materials
Asbestos, lead paint and contaminated soil must be identified before demolition or excavation through a hazardous materials survey. Removal of asbestos must be done by a licensed removalist and must be recorded with the clearance certificate. Hazardous chemicals must be listed on the site chemical register with a safety data sheet available at the point of use.
5.Spills and environmental incidents
Every site and vehicle must carry a spill kit. A spill, dust complaint, sediment escape or noise complaint must be reported to the site supervisor immediately and recorded in the WHS register as an environmental incident. The WHS and Quality Manager will decide whether the incident must be notified to the Environment Protection Authority or the council.
6.Responsibilities and review
Site supervisors are responsible for the controls on their sites and the Yard and Plant Supervisor for the yard and depot. The WHS and Quality Manager will audit environmental controls during monthly site audits and will review this policy each year.
